The White House's Jim Towey: Heathen-bashing traditionalist, or friend to sex cult messiahs?

by John

Nov. 26. Faith czar H. James Towey offends Wiccans and pagans by suggesting that non-traditional religious groups don’t care about the poor. “Once you make it clear to any applicant that public money must go to public purposes and can’t be used to promote ideology,” he wrote, “the fringe groups lose interest. Helping the poor is tough work, and only those with loving hearts seem drawn to it.”

Dec., 2002. Promoting the Faith-Based Initiative, Towey gives a speech at an event hosted by Sun Myung Moon and his ultra-fringe Unification Church: an anti-democratic sect that condemns gays as “dung-eating dogs” and encourages followers to abandon their families, sell flowers on the street, and cleanse the genitalia with a Holy Handkerchief (as well as an onlooking photograph of Washington Times publisher Sun Myung Moon). A group run by Moon’s right-hand men has received a $450,000 grant that year to teach sexual purity in New Jersey schools.
